Michael Andretti F1 by Tellez-ART Michael Andretti F1 by Tellez-ART
This is a graphite drawing of Michael Andretti's F1 car from the 1993 season.
This was my first attempt at doing a highly detailed graphite drawing back in 1994. This piece took me over 350 hours to complete.
Materials used : Photographs for reference, Grumbacher art paper, graphite pencils 4H- 9B, blending stumps.

Thank you so much! I know that 350+hours sounds crazy to spend on one drawing, but that is over a course of about 5 or 6 months. I only do about two drawings a year if that, cause that's all I have time for. I've also been dying to do more F1 drawings of current drivers, but it's so hard to pick one that everyone will like. Anyhow, thanks again so much!

Great ! By the way, this is not the 1993 McLaren Ford. I think it is the 1992 one.

Well, I can easily put this piece on top of the list of Great Auto Racing Deviations I've ever seen. Absolutely brilliant, I will give this a :+fav: and I will go check out your gallery immediately.

You're welcome for the compliment, I try my best to select words that give maximum effect. Thank you for taking the time to make it and post it on DA :), this work was 350 hours well spent. It's truly a shame that more people on DA are not into sports or auto racing, your work would get so much more attention otherwise. I'm still amazed by this. I use references all the time, but THIS looks like a black and white photo. It truly is amazing. The lineart is somewhere between excellent and perfect, the shadows and reflections are done at the correct angles, and the blurred effect on the tires is a small but good touch. What impresses me the most, however, is the shading you used in this drawing. I know that the Shell logo is yellow and the number is red, and you used appropriate shading techniques to convey the sense of color. This drawing truly is incredible, I hope this gets a Daily Deviation or something someday. If I find a way to recommend it as a DD, I will ;).

Hi again Matt. Once more, you have left me speechless and in aw of the amazing compliment you've given me!! I truly mean it when I say that I'm honored that you like the piece and for the fav. I wish I had more time to draw so people could see more in my gallery. But there's that little thing called "LIFE" that keeps getting in the way!! I look back at all the art I've done in the past and wish I would have taken pictures of it all. Because then I'd have a lot more to see in my gallery then just five pieces of work! Again....thank you thank you thank you for the wonderful compliment!! And by the way, do you live in Indianapolis In? Because the pictures in your gallery of the NASCARS are from the Brickyard 400. And believe it or not, I use to live in Indy but I moved to Florida twelve years ago. I miss Indy so much. Mostly because of all the racing that takes place there. If you think about it, Indy was the only place that had every form of racing to go there! Indycar,F1,Nascar,Nationwide,NHRA,MotoGP just to name a few!!! Anyhow....thanks again, and nice talkin to ya!!

I guess I have a talent for giving good comments. It makes the process of making friends easier ;) And to answer your question, no I don't live in Indy. I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. However, I've been making the trip to the Brickyard every year with my father since 1997. I was only 7 years old for my first NASCAR race. I'm currently 21. Going to Indy to watch the races has been an amazing experience. And yes, Indianapolis should be honored to have nearly every major motorsports series come to town to race.

You're welcome again, and best of luck to you, your life, and all of your future endeavors.

Hey my friend, that's so cool that you and your Dad make the trip every year to Indy! I wish my father would have started a tradition like that with me. But he was never into racing. I remember when NASCAR first went to Indy back in 1994, it was so cool!! I was so excited because Jeff Gordan was my favorite driver and to see him win the inaugural Brickyard is something I'll never forget! By the way did you ever get a chance to check out a Indycar race at the Milwaukee mile race track?

NASCAR coming to Indy was a very big deal, I can recall. To be honest, I can't think of a better way than for a hometown boy to win the first event.

I have watched a few races at the Milwaukee Mile, some Nationwide Series, Camping World Truck Series, former Champ Car races, an ASA race, and most recently IRL. My best memory from the Mile was the 2004 Champ Car race. Foreign drivers were dominating the series, and American drivers were (once again) considered inept. So, what did the American drivers do for that race? Ryan Hunter-Reay led ALL 250 laps en-route to a win, and the other 2 Americans in the series, Jimmy Vasser and AJ Allmendinger, took 4th and 5th, respectively.

Unfortunately, 2010 may have been my last year at Indy. I will be in Navy Boot Camp when next years race comes around.

So, what made you a huge race fan?

Hey Matt, it's really great to talk to a true race fan who knows their racing. I've loved all types of motor racing ever sense a young age of eleven. But, my true love has always been Indycar. Go figure!! Which back in my day....it was called CART! Which later changed to CHAMPCAR. My all time favorite driver is Rick Mears. I had the pleasure of meeting Rick and getting his autograph back in 1981 in the pits at the 500. And Still to this day, he is one of the nicest drivers I've ever met! "PERIOD!!" And when he retired, Paul Tracy became my next favorite driver. Don't ask why! Anyhow, it sounds like you'll have a lot of memories to cherish with all the trips to Indy with your father, as well as all the other races you got to experience. I wish you the very best, and I pray nothing but blessings for you and your new life in the Navy! Take care and God bless!!!!

I'm not in the slightest interested in cars but I would hang this picture on my wall!!!
It looks so realistic that I would be frightened that it could come out of the paper^^

Very nice work, but this car is not from 1993 season. This is McLaren MP4/6-Honda from 1991 season. And the numbers were 1 (for Ayrton Senna) and 2 (for Gerhard Berger) for that year. Michael was driving MP4/8-Ford in 1993 season .

350 hours..??? Wow! I've never spent longer than 60 hours on a piece in my life. I am impressed you spent that much time, geeze, that would be nearly 2 months (and that's working 8 hours a day every day) I'd have passed out 1/2 way thru :faint:

Hey athenatt, thank you so much for commenting on my F1 piece. I know 350 hours sounds totally crazy, but you did come close with the two months 8 hours a day guess! I actually did the piece over a three month period. And when I do draw, I'm never in a hurry to get a piece done. I really do take my time!! I do about two pieces of work a year because thats about all I have time for. I really wish I would have taken pictures of all the work I've done, I'd have so much more to see in my gallery then just four pieces of work! Anyhow...thanks so much again!!
